Chinatown
The San Francisco General Plan says this is the oldest Chinese American community in the United States, and New York is the largest. Chinese residents were at Portsmouth Square when California joined the Union and the neighborhood stayed on the same ground for more than a century. The earliest Chinese business center was along Sacramento Street (1853–1863). Grant Avenue, called Dupont Street before the earthquake, is the shopping street.
